Why Referrals are an Overlooked Goldmine
Many people completely overlook referral programs as a way to bring in money to their homes.
For example, I have been a T-Mobile customer for ages, and really just became aware of their referral program a few weeks ago.
When I sat down and took at look at the all the companies I do business with that offer referral programs, I came up with over $300+ per month in referrals that I was leaving on the table. That motivated me to use the existing tools I already use, to make referrals.
1. Low Barrier to Entry: No special skills, degrees, or significant investments are required. If you can share a link or talk about a product, you can start earning. It's as simple as that. And in many cases you can set up simple systems (like I did) that will allow you to make referrals on auto-pilot.
2. Passive Income Potential: Once you’ve referred someone, some programs (like Swagbucks) will allow you you to earn from the purchases of people you refer, as long as they are a member of the program. This means you can earn passively over time.
3. Flexibility: You can promote products and services that align with your interests and values, making it easier and more natural to share with your network.
4. Scalability: The more you share, the more you can earn. As your network grows, so does your earning potential.
How to Get Started
- Research. To get started you'll need to do a little research. Do a Google search for some of the companies you do business with. Check out their top navigation for referral programs. Scroll to the bottom of the page to find information their referral program. You can also type in Google "the name of the company + referral program". To see if they offer one. Once you find a referral program write down the details and maybe bookmark the page. Do that for all the companies you can think of that you have a customer relationship with.
- Create a List. Create a list of the companies that have referral programs you're interested in promoting. You might want to use a spreadsheet like Google Sheets to enter the programs and any details.
- Get Your Referral Link. If you find that there is a referral program that you're interested in, follow the instructions to get your referral link. Add your referral link to your spreadsheet or list to make it easy to set up your pages in the next step.
- Set Up a Page. To receive the best results (more people who actually sign up), you'll want to do more than send out a ton of links to your friends and family and say go for it. Keep in mind that some of these programs are ongoing and you can earn as long as the person you refer stays active in the program.
To maximize your results (more sign ups), create a page/resource that your referrals can use to learn about programs that might interest them and so that they can get the instructions they can use to get started.
It's been my experience that it's better to set up landing pages or blog posts (versus just sending out a bunch of links that have no background or context) via email. Providing information that makes it easy for people who are current customers to understand the benefits of signing up, will increase the number of people who take action.
Depending on how much time you want to devote, you might even consider starting a newsletter. You'll find some ideas below.
1. Create a Blog Post, Newsletter, a Google Doc or Build a Landing Page: Choose one of the methods shown below as a way to share the programs you would like to refer:
- Blogging. If you're a blogger this will be easy. Just create a blog post that covers each of the companies on your list. Explain the referral program and provide a call to action that makes it easy for interested parties to join. Share the posts with your friends, family and associates. - Google Docs. You can also create a document on Google Docs for free. Your document can list the companies you've decided to refer, providing information about each program and including your referral link. Google Docs makes it easy to share the document with your friends and family and anyone else who would like to get started.
- Landing Page. A landing page is also a wonderful way to promote referral programs. Your pages can be set up to explain the details about the products and programs you want to promote. Add a call to action that makes it easy for anyone to get signed up. Then share your landing page with friends and family.
- Newsletter. You can also create a newsletter that you share via email, and encourage your friends and family to join your list. A newsletter can be easily shared, which can make your referrals grow even faster. Provide regular updates about the referral programs you promote and keep subscribers in the loop about additional programs and deals.
Sharing posts or pages will provide a better user experience than simply sending links all over the place. It will instill a sense of confidence from your friends and family, that you have the knowledge to help them benefit from the programs. And it won't make you come across as salesy.
Make your content simple, with simple navigation, and include valuable information like insider tips, deals and resources your friends can use to get the most out of the program. Of course you'll add your referral links to each page you create, making it easy for anyone to join.

Put yourself in the shoes of your readers. What questions did you want answered before you bought or signed up for the product? What have your experiences been? The goal is helpful content.
5. Leverage Your Existing Network: Don't be shy about sharing your referral links with friends, family, and acquaintances. If you're using the products or services, think of people with similar interests that might find these items of value. Use your social media platforms, join online communities, and participate in forums related to your niche.

You might also consider creating a spreadsheet that contains your referral links, your dashboard or analytics provided by referral programs to monitor your earnings and measure your results and optimize your strategy.
