It's a Smart Idea to Do the Work

Whether you're trying to grow your email list or improve the number of subscribers and followers you have on social media, it's not as hard as you might think.  It's a lot easier if you use a proven system and a process that is tried and true.

That includes doing the prep work and using tools that will enable you to automate certain functions.

Get the best results when you use a process that helps you make a true connection with your visitors, converting them from visitors to leads and from leads to customers.

It's important to note that having followers is not the same as having subscribers. When visitors become subscribers they are making a real connection with your business that has the potential to go further. By giving you their contact information, subscribers are saying, I like what I see and I want to learn more.

With followers, the potential is there, but these types of visitors haven't taken that additional step to truly connect with your business by giving you a way to contact them.

Followers are somewhat on the honor system to return to your content on a regular basis. To convert more followers into leads, it's important to advertise why they would benefit from having regular contact with your business.

If you're using social media, it's important to transform followers to subscribers by using the promotion strategies discussed below.

In addition to that, we'll show you a process you can use to convert more visitors and followers into subscribers. This is a proven process that will enable you to be successful in any online business, and any niche.

You can apply what you learn here to not only your current business, but any business you may decide to start in the future.

The process you'll learn in this article (not your product, not your compensation plan and not your company) is the heart and soul of your business...

Your Audience... The Heart of It All ❤️

The heart and soul of any business is its audience, and its ability to create brand awareness, converting visitors into customers. And in business, the way to build an audience by building an email list.

You may have heard people talk about list building, building a list, lead generation, etc. All those terms refer to building an audience.

How to Quickly Get Your First 1000 Email Subscribers
makingitremotly.com

An audience is defined on Dictionary.com as (1) the group of spectators at a public event; listeners or viewers collectively, as in attendance at a theater or concert (2) a regular public that manifests interest, support, enthusiasm, or the like; a following (3) opportunity to be heard; chance to speak to or before a person or group. I think these three definitions sum it up well.

Words used to describe an audience could include visitors, readers, traffic, website viewers, users, followers, leads, consumers, customers, and there are probably other terms you might use to identify your audience. As you'll find out as you read on, all audiences are not created equally.

How Would You Categorize Your Regular Site Visitors?

An audience can consist of the following kinds of visitors:

  • One Time Visitors - These consumers land on your site, they look around and they don't like what they see so they leave and never return. You can determine whether your site has a high bounce rate by reviewing your Google Analytics reports. Bounce rate is the percentage of site visitors who land on a page, take a look around and decide to leave. When viewing your Google Analytics reports look at the  percentage of visitors that fall into this category. Hopefully this number is not too high, if so read on to Steps 1 and 2, to receive insight on how to fix the problem.
  • Followers - These are people who land on your content from a search (who find you by accident), or they find you on social media. There is something they like about your content, and they decide to take the step of following your profile. These followers may be used to seeing your content might be at the beginning of the buying process. They may be looking around for a solution, or just browsing. They may not even know they have a problem that needs your help. However, they see your content and it resonates with them on some level, but they may be somewhat skeptical as to whether your business can really help them. They may return to your platform as they navigate through their research process.
  • Leads - These consumers know they have a problem and they are actively looking for a solution. They see your content, and they know that you have a solution they might be interested in. They may be researching what they consider to be the best solution. They like what they see, and they want to try you solution. They may not be quite ready to make a purchase but your free lead magnet provides an excellent incentive that motivates them to give you their contact information. With their contact information in hand, you provide them with a sample of the information, education and solutions they need to solve their problems and make their lives better. The goal is that they will determine that you're the best solution and eventually become a customer.
  • Customers - These consumers have done their research on the topics and products you provide. They see a direct connection between the solutions you offer and the issues they are experiencing. They like your content and they have made a purchase of at least one of your products. They are all in. Now, the ball is in your court to deliver even more value so that they will tell all their friends and family about your company, while making additional purchases.

Marketing Tip

To have a thriving business you need more leads and customers versus followers and one time visitors. If your business is not attracting these kinds of visitors, you need to make changes.

The bottom line is that to have a thriving business, you need an audience that consists of more leads and customers than followers and one time visitors.  And if you don't have an audience that includes these two kinds of consumers, your business may suffer because of it

Taking the actions required to build a list (audience) ensures that you have a targeted audience (based on your niche) of fans and potential customers who are interested in your business and what you have to offer.

It also ensures that you have a continuous pipeline of people you can talk to about your business at all times.

The Sound of Crickets

There's nothing worse than working hard on your content, whether it's your products, videos, blogs posts, social media, or podcast episodes and getting no feedback.

When you hit publish and no one clicks or looks at what you have to offer, you get a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. But this is the thing... Until you build a targeted audience of raving fans, you will hear crickets.  And even worse, you won't make any money.

If you're currently hearing crickets in your business, the process, tools and resources discussed in this article will help to ensure that you don't hear crickets in your business going forward.

Prep Work

Let's get started with the steps you'll need to take to build an amazing list. This prep work will lay a solid foundation, enabling you to attract the perfect audience of potential customers who will be candidates for what you have to offer.

Step 1. Identify Your Niche

Specifically, the people who are in that niche. Before you can attract the right people to your business, you have to understand who they are.

What characteristics do they have that would make them a good fit for your business? The easiest way to understand your audience is to determine the niche you want to serve with your products and services.

The product workbook helps you analyze your primary products and services to ensure that they meet the needs of your ideal customers.

Step 2. Dig Deeper

Taking time to dig deeper to understand your ideal customer will pay off in the long run in ways you can't imagine.

Outline your ideal customer's traits, challenges, wishes and dreams. This is an important step in helping you create content that will attract the right people to your business.

When you know your ideal customers, you'll have fewer one time visitors and you'll attract more leads when you provide solutions (products and services) designed to help them reach their goals.

The more you help your ideal customers reach their goals, the more results you'll get in achieving yours.

It's also important to maintain a list or document that includes their traits, challenges, wishes and dreams, and refine this list over time, as you learn more.

Step 3. Select an Email Marketing Provider

You will need to set up an automated system (funnel) for your business that helps you generate leads and build your list using email marketing.

If you haven't done so already, select an email marketing provider like the ones listed below. This provider is different from the company you use for your personal email account.

This company will be responsible for handling your business subscribers, and the data they will provide when they become part of your audience.

When selecting an email marketing provider, consider the following:

  • The number of emails you’ll need to send on a monthly basis
  • How much you’ll pay the company to perform this service
  • Whether the company offers any workflow automation features
  • Whether the company will allow you to connect your website or selling platform of choice to forms that will be used to collect contact information.
  • If you don’t have a website, you will also need a landing page

We've put together a list of providers  that will include these features as part of their free plans.

Getting to 1000 Subscribers Quickly

Step 4. Create an Opt-in Offer They Can't Refuse

In this section we'll describe the steps needed to quickly get to 1000 subscribers.

Now that you've done the prep work, and you understand what your ideal customers want and need, and you have your email provider, you're ready to create an offer that they will love! This is where you will create a freebie, otherwise known as a lead magnet.

A lead magnet is an irresistible offer that your ideal customers will clamor to get their hands on. This free offer gives so much value that anyone in your niche would be crazy to pass it up.

At the same time, it doesn't tell subscribers how to solve every issue for every problem. In other words, your lead magnet should solve only one nagging problem, giving your ideal customers an idea of what it's like to work with you.  There's a fine balance because you totally want to add value and overdeliver, without giving away the entire farm!

Your lead magnet should give subscribers value that shows that you know what you're doing, and gives them a taste of what it's like to work with you.

Lead Generation Tip

Your lead magnet should provide a deeper glimpse into your topic, without overwhelming subscribers. Provide a quick solution that solves ONE nagging problem for potential customers.

You want to deliver a quick and easy transformation or solution to the problem that keeps your ideal customers up at night. Show them how to solve the problem that keeps them from accomplishing their goals.

What Your Lead Magnet Is Not...

This lead magnet can't be fluff, or BS... it has to deliver on the promise that's described in your marketing. If you hype up your lead magnet with promises you can't (or don't) keep, your credibility will suffer. The goal is to provide value that builds and maintains your relationship, keeping potential customers coming back for more.

If you come up with some fluffy piece of content and use it as a lead magnet, you will do yourself a disservice in the long run. Yes, people may sign up, get the fluff and yes they are "technically" on your list. Whooo, hooo! You won! But not for long.

If you don't deliver on your promise for results, they won't open future emails, and at some point they will unsubscribe from your list. So in the long run you really didn't win. The only way to win with your new subscribers is to deliver value.

So it's important to do the work outlined in Steps 1 & 2 of this article to understand your audience. Only then will you be able to create something they can actually use. Something they will be happy to receive.

For the best results, your lead magnet should give subscribers easy to follow steps they can make to improve or remove the painful area of their journey.

When creating marketing materials for the pain point, it's important to highlight the pain point, talk about the freebie (solution) and how it helps to improve the pain point. Next, describe the transformation that will happen when they use the free item you're offering.

Some examples of a freebie might be a free training video, an audio book, checklist, worksheets, or guides.

Put Lead Generation and Sales on Auto-Pilot

Step 5. Set up a Lead Generation System That Helps You Earn While You Sleep

Set up a system that will help you communicate with your ideal customers, turn them into leads and bringing them to your content as much as you want... on auto-pilot.

Build your first sales and marketing funnel using your email provider and a few other tools that should be available with your theme and platform of choice.

The Final Step

Step 6. Promote Your List

This is the final step, but one of the most important ones. This is the step that many new entrepreneurs leave off.

They think that if they promote their business, people will naturally "find" their opt in and lead generation content.

And while to a certain degree, that might be true, you don't want potential customers to "find" you.  You want to promote your freebie (lead magnet) so that anyone who is looking for the solutions you offer, will find you and have an opportunity to opt in to get more information.

You have to put your lead generation offers out there so they can be found.  And your lead magnet is an offer, just like any other offer you might be promoting.

Just because it's free, doesn't mean you treat it any differently than you would any other products or services you are promoting.

Promote Your Lead Magnet to Reach Your Goal of 1000 Leads

Using the steps outlined in the list building course, your opt in landing page (that tells what subscribers will get with your freebie) will be the beginning of your funnel. Promote this page to reach your goal of 1000 leads.

  • Use Canva to create a visual image that tells potential subscribers what they will get with your freebie
  • Size the image for all the relevant the social media platforms
  • Post your image on social media platforms on a regular basis
  • Include a call to action that gets visitors to click on your image
  • Place sharing functionality on your opt-in landing page and include a call to action for visitors to share your image with their friends and family

It's important to understand your ideal customers and speak their language so that your ad copy, emails and other sales materials will jump off the page and get their attention.

If you have the mindset that "if you build it, they will come" your business will be left in the dust by the competition.

You'll have a harder time reaching your sales goals if you don't actively promote your lead magnet, and package your offer in a way that is attractive to your audience.

Why Now Is the Time to Get Started

I hope I've shown you why you need a list, like right now... No matter where you are in your entrepreneurial journey, your business needs a way to communicate with an audience of people who want and need what you have to offer.

You may have heard that email marketing is dead, and

The best way to reach that audience is to do the work and set up an email list that brings in traffic and turns that traffic into leads.

The steps and resources outlined in this article will help you do just that.

The best time to start is when you start your business, but it's never too late. Use the steps above to get started. And subscribe to our YouTube channel to get more great tips, tools and resources for your business.

Summary

When you see companies that are successful online, it's because they have done the work outlined in steps 1 - 6.

Yes, it takes time. and it can be a little monotonous, but it's well worth it. The knowledge they obtain from those steps enables them to generate traffic. leads and sales, building an audience of raving fans.

They also use that information to build on those relationships, enabling their businesses to weather changes in the market, and the influences of a sometimes unstable, chaotic market as well.

Most importantly they don't stop doing the work when they reach their lead generation goals.

They continue doing the work to understand trends, changes in consumer opinions and new avenues they can pursue to continually grow their business and add new streams of income to an ever changing market.
