How to Create Your First Digital Product

Digital products are relatively easy to make, once you know who your ideal customers are and the niche you want to serve. This module will focus on ideas you can use to get started.

If you start making products before you know who you want to sell to, you may waste a lot of time. However, this is how a lot of people start online. They make a ton of stuff, they put it online and they hope and pray that it sells.

Hoping and praying is no way to build a thriving business. You'll need a strategy that helps you attract people to your business, convinces them to buy (without arm twisting) and delivers the product on auto-pilot.

Digital Products In Action

The design on this mug is an example of a digital product that is sold B2B and used with the print on demand business model. The customer would buy the image from your shop to use on a variety of different products.

Once you have an idea of what you want to make, one approach would be to make a diagram or draw it out to see how it will look on paper. Then gather your tools and start designing!  Even if you don’t have the best design skills Canva has lots of templates you can use to create most file types.

Where will you design your products? Will you use your laptop, a desktop or tablet? There are people who sit in the park and create digital products on their iPad. I’ve created them on my iPhone. You could create an amazing digital product on your iPad using tools like Procreate, Canva or Adobe Illustrator in an hour or less.

You can use a number of different tools to make digital products. This includes Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat, Photoshop, and InDesign to name a few.

I recommend Canva because it’s so easy to use, and they provide a ton of templates which makes it easy for beginners to start. Using a template means you don’t have to start from scratch. As part of their terms Canva requests that you don’t just take their templates and use them as is, they want you to make them uniquely yours.

Most people start with a tool they feel comfortable using and they stick with it. Others’ like me, use a variety of tools, depending on the kind of product I’m making.

To make them, you would have an idea of what you were going to make before getting started.

You could use a tool like Canva (link) to create something like a cheatsheet, worksheet, eBook, etc. Tools like Canva and Adobe Express have a lot of free templates you can use as a starting point, versus starting from scratch. This makes creating a simple streamlined process.
