Calling one's warm market has worked extremely well for some people.  It works well if you have an audience of people who know, like and trust you beforehand. Some people are in professions that put them in front of a large audience on a regular basis. For example, professional speakers, coaches, people who belong to large organizations, etc. And for many others who are not in those roles making calls is an exercise in futility.

I know from personal experience because I was one of the "others" who struggled to earn online, until I learned about attraction marketing. I was following people in my organization who said they used phone calls to build their businesses. Even though I didn't want to build in that way, I tried it, and I totally sucked.

When considering your ability to succeed in building an online business you have to determine where you are in the following scenarios.

This is the thing. People in network marketing, direct sales, affiliate marketing, etc., come from all kinds of experiences and backgrounds.  Consider the following about people who are working with your company:

  • There are people who have come to your company from other opportunities where they've built a network that followed them to their new opportunity with your company.  
  • Some have sales backgrounds that give them an advantage over someone who doesn't have a clue about sales.
  • Some are naturally "people" oriented and are able to talk to anyone at any time and any location. This helps them make phone calls with ease. 
  • Many are part of organizations in the offline world that they tap into, bringing their offline connections into the online world, getting their network marketing business off the ground with ease. 
  • Others are using attraction marketing strategies (or something similar) with phone calls (maybe) to build a business that helps them meet their sales and marketing goals.

On the other hand there are people, who have different backgrounds that make calling their warm market an exercise in futility.  These are people who are in the following scenarios: 

  • People who are smart and knowledgeable who may be more introverted, who have an area of expertise and specialty that they can share with the world to earn extra part time or full time income online. 
  • Those who are starting from stratch, with no pre-established network of people who follow them.
  • People with no sales and marketing background who have the desire to be successful with an online business.
  • People who struggle with the one size fits all approach to selling online.

So your upline is not completely fibbing when they say they are making phone calls to build their business. But they are giving you a "one size fit's all" solution that only helps a certain portion of their audience be successful.

The big question is, if phone calls are not working and that's the only method you're using, how will you ever make progress in your business?

And an even bigger question is, how do your potential customers feel about your business when you approach them this way? Are you coming across as someone  who knows what they are doing or are you looking desperate and spammy?

What is Cold Calling?

Cold calling is defined as "making an unsolicited call to someone, by telephone or in person, in an attempt to sell goods or services". 

Calling your cold market means you're calling people who are not familiar with you or your business.

Calling your warm market means you're calling and marketing to people you know, like friends, relatives, referrals or existing customers.

The term unsolicited, meaning the person being called didn't request your call,  and this is what makes cold calling problematic. By definition, even if you make an unsolicited call to someone in your warm market, it can still be awkward (and cold to a certain degree) because it is unsolicited. 

Why Phone Calls Have Worked for Some

To be honest, calling friends and family has worked very well for some as shown in the bulleted list above. But as you also know there is not a one size fits all solution to reaching the right audience and thriving with an online business.

More Reasons Why Phone Calls Don't Work

  • When you get on the phone with a prospect, you have about two seconds to get the person's attention and make them interested enough to stay on the phone with you.

If you can't speak to a pain point they're experiencing, if they don't trust you, if they feel weird or awkward during your sales presentation, or if they are confused, they will more than likely end the call quickly.   • Many savvy customers do their research on their phones, tablets or their device of choice to learn about options that are best for them. They hate to talk to someone who tries to sell them on something.

  • Most people don't like being talked into buying something.
  • Calling people you haven't talked to in years with a sales pitch, or even worse, calling people who have no idea who you are, catches people off guard. This places pressure on them to buy "something" if only to get you off the phone. It can also make those close to you feel awkward if they say no to what you're offering
  • Today's consumer is overloaded with telemarketers, social media and online advertising. Many of them are turned off by unsolicited sales calls, as well as text or instant messages and will hang up or tell you to get lost. 

Is this the way you want to start your business relationship with potential customers? These scenarios are not how long term, loyal business relationships are built.
