The Role of Fonts in Content Creation

Have you ever looked at a piece of content that used the standard fonts and lackluster images? If so, it probably made the content a little dull and boring, right? On the other hand, using fonts that radiate personality can mean the difference between your content being read or skipped.

It's important, especially for your most important content, to use the right combination of fonts and images.

Using something as simple as the bright, brilliant fonts when creating content for your projects, can make a huge difference in your results.

Different Types of Fonts and How They are Used

Believe it or not, fonts have an important role to play when it comes to helping bloggers, POD shop owners and designers accomplish their goals. Here are some points to consider when you're choose fonts for your next project.

  • Reading fonts - These are classic fonts that make your written words look great while being easier to see on the page.

Sans-serif fonts like Arial and Verdana are considered to be easier to read because they don't have extra decorative elements called tails.  Sans-serif fonts are made up of straight, simple, clean lines that are the same width throughout.

Serif fonts, like Times New Roman, are fancier fonts that have those decorative lines or tapers (also commonly referred to as “tails” or “feet”) that make them harder to read.

  • Decorative fonts - Decorative and display fonts are used in headlines, on posters and advertisements. This style of type and lettering could be artistic and eye-catching in a way that wasn’t considered previously.
  • Display fonts - These fonts are used for social media posts, book covers, signage or headings to attract attention. They are normally bold, dramatic and speak to a certain mood that sets the tone of the creative piece.
  • Script fonts - Script typefaces are based upon the varied and often fluid strokes created by handwriting. They are generally used for display or trade printing, rather than for body text.
  • Image fonts - Some fonts are actually symbols and images you can use in your designs as well. Take a look at the image below to see how the font Lovingly Flourish looks when used on products.

Open Type Versus True Type Fonts

You may have seen the terms Open Type and True Type Fonts and wondered what all that means for your project. They are file formats for storing font information.

OpenType, is a joint effort from Adobe and Microsoft, is the latest font format to be introduced.

Like TrueType, OpenType fonts contain both the screen and printer font data in a single component.

However, the OpenType format has several exclusive capabilities including support for multiple platforms and expanded character sets.

OpenType fonts can be used on either Macintosh or Windows operating systems. Additionally, the OpenType format permits the storage of up to 65,000 characters.

This additional space provides type designers with the freedom to include add-ons such as small caps, old style figures, alternate characters and other extras that previously needed to be distributed as separate fonts.

The TrueType format was jointly developed by Apple and Microsoft in the late 80s, several years after the release of the PostScript font format.

Many of the fonts included with both the Macintosh and Windows operating systems are TrueType.

TrueType is an older font format that contains both the screen and printer font data in a single component, making the fonts easier to install.

The goal when using any font is that you want the font chosen to be distributed from your output device (screen or print) and look the same as the font in your design.

The fonts in the Envato market will work with True Type or Open Type format requirements. So they will work well if you have an older printer that requires a specific format.
