What if you could earn money online without creating a product, holding inventory, or managing customer service? That’s the magic of affiliate marketing—a beginner-friendly business model that lets you get paid simply for recommending the products you love.❤️

Whether you’re a blogger, a content creator, or just starting out, affiliate marketing opens the door to passive income and financial freedom on your terms.

In this post, we’ll show you the blueprint to affiliate marketing and break it down step-by-step so you can launch your own affiliate marketing journey with confidence—even if you’re starting from scratch.

Affiliate marketing is one of the easiest ways to start earning income online, especially if you're new to running a business. You don’t need a warehouse full of products or a team of employees—just a laptop, an internet connection, and a willingness to share helpful recommendations.

In this beginner-friendly guide, you’ll learn how affiliate marketing works, how to find the right products to promote, and what it takes to turn clicks into commissions. If you’ve ever told a friend about your favorite product or posted a review online, you already have what it takes to get started.

First let's start by telling you what affiliate marketing is. The best definition of affiliate marketing is shown below.

Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting products created by other companies. You find a product you like, promote it to others and earn a piece of the profit for each sale that you make.

This post will not only show you how to get started as an affiliate, it will show you why starting your own affiliate program might be a good option.

It will also cover key elements that will set you up for success in reaching your sales goals. You should have these elements in place before you start working as an affiliate.

It's fairly easy to become an affiliate if you have a platform or an effective way to get your advertising messages out to an audience of potential customers.

Use the tips and tools you'll discover in this post to get results quickly.  And avoid the mistakes many business owners make when starting out.

How the Pros Work from Home

Affiliate marketing is the way many writers, freelancers, bloggers, and eCommerce shop owners are earning passive income from home.

Let's start by defining a few concepts. When a blogger, platform or website owner partners with a brand to promote the brand's content, they take on the role of an affiliate or publisher for that brand.

The company or brand that hosts the affiliate program is the advertiser, also called sponsors and merchants.

Affiliates work with advertisers that make or distribute products, services, tools and programs they like. Ideally affiliates sign up to promote products for brands they personally use in their a business, a hobby or interest.

How Affiliates Earn Money

Affiliates earn commissions and bonuses by introducing, reviewing and recommending products, services and tools they feel will be helpful to their audience.

There are several ways to earn from affiliate marketing. You can earn a commission in the form of a percentage, a one time fee or a recurring fee. We'll explain the details in the next section.

The way that bloggers, YouTube influencers and shop or eCommerce owners earn money is that they consistently demonstrate, highlight and recommend products and services to their readers, hoping their followers will take action and buy the recommended products.

When affiliates promote products made by other brands, they earn a commission each time one of their audience members make a purchase from the publisher's website.

So if affiliates are good at building sales funnels and driving traffic through a buyer journey they will be successful at earning from affiliate marketing.

Becoming an affiliate marketer is a great way to earn while you do other things like working a full time job. If you become good enough at selling, affiliate marketing could be a great way to transition out of the 9 to 5.

It's very common to see people earning this way. People who are working, going to school, taking care of family members or focusing on other income generating activities can earn using affiliate marketing.

How to Earn Consistent Income as an Affiliate

As mentioned in the previous section, you can earn in various ways as an affiliate.

When searching for affiliate programs to join, it's important to read the fine print and understand how (and how often) you will earn.

You'll also want to read the terms of service for each affiliate program to learn what you can and cannot do when promoting the merchant's products.

Each brand decides how their affiliate programs will run. Which means you can be paid a percentage of the purchase price or a flat fee for each sale you send to your merchant's website.

You can also be paid on a recurring basis which means you will receive a monthly fee or percentage (versus a one time payment) as long as the person you refer stays active in the merchant's affiliate membership or subscription.

Affiliate programs that promote memberships and subscriptions are a great way to earn consistent income.

Which Role Will You Choose?

If you're interested in getting involved in affiliate marketing, you should also decide whether you want to become an affiliate or if you want to acquire affiliates. You can also perform in both roles.

You can have your own affiliate program while participating in the affiliate programs hosted by other companies.

Acquiring Affiliates. The biggest benefit of acquiring affiliates is to have your own sales force who helps you spread the word about your business.

For example, if you run a blog or an e-commerce site, and your goal is to increase traffic that turns into sales, you might consider acquiring affiliates. You would have the role of merchant and people would apply to join your program.

If approved, your affiliates would share your promotions on their blog, video channel, podcast or website. They would distribute information about your products and services to their audience.

Read our article on starting an affiliate program to learn more about the benefits of starting and the things you'll need to make it successful.

Becoming an Affiliate. Another example would be someone who runs a small content site as a hobby. This person might want to simply bring in a little extra money to cover the costs associated with running their site.

Becoming an affiliate means the affiliate will have the role of publisher.  They would start affiliate marketing by joining a few programs, promoting other people's products and services.

They would promote products that compliment what they talk about on their site, earning a fee from each sale.

Making Full Time Income

Now that you understand what affiliate marketing is, and how it works, here are the steps you can take to become an affiliate marketer full time:

  • Evaluate your hobbies, skills and interests
  • Choose a niche that matches your interests
  • Choose a platform that you can use to communicate with your audience. For example, a blog, video channel, etc.
  • Find affiliate programs and products that match your chosen niche and interests
  • Start an email list and sales funnel that you can send traffic to, a list of potential customers you can follow up with.
  • Once potential customers have joined your list, send them on to your merchant's website where they can make a purchase.

Making a full time living from affiliate marketing will require a devoted audience of people (traffic) who are interested in your products and services.

To create this kind of audience, it's important to find a niche related to the kinds of products and services you're offering.

The more you can speak to the needs of a specific audience, the more you will weed out people who are not interested in your products and attract people who are interested

This ensures that you're only working with people who have a need for what you have to offer.

Your business should also have a home base or central hub. Your hub is a place that you can send potential customers to, so that they can learn more about your offers and your company.

Most consumers are not going to spend money with you unless they know more about who they are dealing with.

This is why having a blog or other online platform that you can use to engage potential customers is important.

For the best results, one of the items on your "to-do" list, (if you haven't done so already) should include creating a blog that enables you to build rapport with potential customers.

Building Your Audience

Your audience (potential customers) need a consistent place online where they can find you and access your content. Building a self hosted blog can help your business turn the corner.  It allows you to rent server space from a hosting provider, which means you have control over how you run your business.

By creating content that helps people in your niche, you'll also attract people who are interested in your topic to take a look at your products and services.

A blog is an excellent way to attract like minded people by informing, educating, and entertaining them with your content.

Your blog, platform or central hub enables you to provide current information that your readers can access in the way that works best for them.

Meet Potential Customers Where They Are

We all learn and absorb information in different ways. Some of your readers will prefer reading your content, some will like watching videos, some will like listening (podcast) to your content, some will like downloadable content they can save and access later, and some will prefer live streaming for the most current information. Some like a combination of all these methods.

Your goal as a content creator and affiliate is to bring people into your hub, helping them understand how your product and services can help make their lives better. Your goal is to also attract those who are actively looking for what you and your sponsors have to offer.

Your hub is similar to having a brick and mortar location, only it's on the web. It allows you to establish credibility, build relationships and ultimately generate sales.

Finding ways to get your audience involved and interacting with your site will be important when it comes to building relationships and improving the know, like and trust factor with your readers.

Once you have an engaged, loyal audience that knows, likes and trusts you, your income from affiliate marketing has the potential to grow and move ahead by leaps and bounds.

On the other side of the coin, without an audience of people who know like and trust you, you will likely struggle when it comes to reaching your earning potential.

The better you become at bringing new audience members into your hub that will convert to leads, the more you increase your ability to build relationships and a sense of community.

With a central hub, you allow people to connect with you and learn more about your favorite cause, hobby, or business (products and services) and understand more about ultimately doing business with your company.

Starting a YouTube channel combines video with other forms of content on your blog. This can be a very successful strategy for affiliate marketers.

One word of caution for relying strictly on YouTube is that YouTube is a social channel owned by Google. That means they can shut down your account if you go outside their guidelines.

But combining your channel with something you have more control over, like a self hosted blog can enable you to survive and regroup if your YouTube channel is shut down.

There is nothing worse than establishing a relationship with advertisers and building your brand using social media, only to be limited or shut down by third party platforms or social media platform.

Watch a video that shows you how to post your affiliate links in a way that avoids those issues.

A self-hosted WordPress blog is your best bet when it comes to creating a central hub. This method gives you the most control over your content.

Self-hosting allows you to rent server space from a hosting provider and create content that you control.  This means that the site owner has full access to all the site files and code and can deploy them in any way they like.

Your blog, platform or central hub enables you to update your site with content that your readers can access in the way that works best for them.

Creating content in different formats will make it easier for your readers to retain and understand what you are trying to convey.

Combining your channel with something like a blog that you control will enable you to survive and regroup if your YouTube or other social channels are shut down.

Using the Right Affiliate Marketing Tools

In addition to spicing up your social media channels, there are tools you'll need to be successful at affiliate marketing. Here are a few of the tools I use to build and grow my audience.

Our tutorial is a key tool for anyone who wants to have a thriving online business, whether you're a solopreneur, direct salesperson, network marketer or an affiliate marketer.

If you're interested in building a blog, create your blog with step by step instructions.

You can choose from Thrive theme builder a theme that are built from the ground up to make your entire website convert more of your visitors into subscribers, customers and clients!

Tailwind is a social posting site that enables you to post to Pinterest and Instagram on a schedule you choose. Promote your affiliate links, as long as you follow the terms of service.

To be successful with affiliate marketing, you should learn as much as you can about the topic.

Use the social platforms where your ideal customers hang out to engage, educate, and inform them with content that will make their lives better.

Once you're up and running with various programs you'll find that some of the well known retail brands, like Amazon, Walmart, Target, etc. have affiliate programs that pay a lower commission per sale.

But the great thing about using these sites as part of your overall strategy, is that your audience knows, likes and trust these companies.  And they probably have an existing relationship with at least one of them. That means the know, like and trust factor is already there.

The best option for your business (affiliate or advertiser) depends on:

  • Your needs as an entrepreneur and how you want to grow your business
  • The needs of your readers and finding advertisers with solutions that will fit those needs
  • Your ability to bring the right products together with the right consumers in a productive and consistent way

Becoming an Affiliate is Easy

Becoming an affiliate is relatively easy.  The hard part is doing it in a way that gets the results you're looking for in the shortest amount of time.

Skipping over key elements like building an audience, choosing a central hub or platform, or making use of the right tools, may limit your ability to get the results you're looking for.

Once you have these elements in place, you're ready to sign up for various affiliate programs. Consider joining higher paying affiliate programs.

Step 1: Go to an affiliate network site and fill out an online application to become a member.

The application will ask for some personal information (name, address, payment method) and information about your site (URL, name, and description of your content or what your site is about). They'll have you sign a service agreement.

This valuable asset is commonly overlooked as an opportunity for growth.

Step 2: If the affiliate network approves your application, you can begin picking affiliate programs that interest you and fit your niche.

Step 3: Promote content that will be a logical fit by either matching or complimenting the topics you talk about on your website. Build your audience with the tips in the previous sections.

Landing Pages for WordPress

Fees and Other Charges

Most affiliate networks are completely free for affiliates.  And because so many affiliate programs are free to the affiliate, it's probably in your best interest to steer clear of programs that charge a fee.

If you decide that you want to acquire or bring in affiliates as a merchant or advertiser, there will most likely be fees associated with launching your own affiliate program.

The affiliate network that you join may provide an option to manage your program for you.

The benefits of launching your own affiliate program are many. They may outweigh any charges you will pay.

Once you've chosen some affiliate programs, the online merchants running these programs will have the opportunity to review your site.

If they approve you, the affiliate network and any publishers you have joined in the network will walk you through the process of posting the appropriate links, that come directly from the network's site.

They will also establish payment arrangements with you. Because the amount of money you earn per action can be extremely small, most affiliate networks have a set minimum payout amount.

This means you won't receive a check until the total money owed you reaches a certain amount.

One thing to note is that not all publishers offer small commissions. There are some, especially in the tech and business to business (B2B) industries tend to offer higher commissions.

Wrapping It Up

After you have set everything up using the tips found in our blueprint to affiliate marketing, and you understand how the affiliate network works, you can start incorporating affiliate links, banners, videos and other content provided by your advertisers into you website.

And you can get back to work creating and promoting valuable content for your readers, and wait for your money to come in.
