This is the first in a series of remote jobs that can become part of a strategy that helps you earn more, keep more of what you earn in your pocket and use the time and money you'll gain to launch a business you own and control.

In our remote job series we are helping aspiring entrepreneurs by focusing on common remote job categories like computer support, customer service, data analysis (covered in this article) and virtual assistance, and we show you how to use them to lose the commute and everything that goes along with it.

The Time and Money Drawbacks

One of the biggest drawbacks aspiring entrepreneurs have to starting a business is time and money. The time it takes to launch a business and get it off the ground.

The objections we hear most often have to do with the time required for the transition that takes you from an everyday worker who might be struggling to make ends meet, to a fully launched business that helps you reach your income goals, generating passive income on a regular basis.

Then there's the money required to keep the lights on while you launch a successful business. How much time and money will be required before you're living the life you don't need a vacation from? This of course varies depending on a number of factors.  We will show you how a remote job can help you with both of these dilemmas.

Why Commuting is Counterproductive

  1. Time Drain: Workers spend hours daily commuting, which adds up to weeks or even months annually. This is time that could be better spent on productive tasks.
  2. Stress and Fatigue: Long commutes can cause mental and physical fatigue, reducing overall productivity and motivation for other activities.
  3. Financial Costs: Commuting often involves costs like gas, public transport, vehicle maintenance, or parking fees, leaving less disposable income for investment in personal ventures.
  4. Lost Opportunities: Commuting time is often spent passively, with limited ability to focus on self-improvement, skill-building, or creative pursuits.

4 Reasons a Remote Job Should Be Part of Your Income Building Strategy

Here are four reasons a remote opportunity can give you more time to devote to your business aspirations:

1. Flexible Scheduling to Balance Priorities

Remote work opportunities can often provide more control over your schedule compared to traditional in-office jobs. Many remote roles have flexible hours, allowing you to allocate specific time blocks for your online business while meeting your work responsibilities.

Example: Work your remote job schedule and use the time you would spend on commuting (which can add up to hours each week) to building sales and marketing systems, client projects and business growth tasks, like marketing, planning and product development.

2. Potential for Overlapping Skills

Remote jobs often require skills like time management, digital communication, and technical proficiency—all of which are essential for running an online business. You can leverage these transferable skills to accelerate your entrepreneurial journey.

Example: Experience with leadership, project management tools in your remote job can help you streamline operations in your online business. If you've worked on projects that helped your employer save money or improve efficiency, these skills can also be transferred to your business.

3. Steady Income to Reduce Financial Risk

A remote job provides a consistent income stream while you build your business, helping you cover living expenses, invest in tools or marketing, and reduce financial stress. This safety net allows you to take calculated risks in your business without compromising financial stability.

Example: Use the money you'll save from losing the commute, i.e. eating out, wardrobe, weather gear and accessories, gas, etc. to fund building a blog, choosing a business model with low start up costs and building systems that help you run your business while you work your 9 to 5.

4. Opportunity to Test and Validate Business Ideas

Working from home enables you to test and refine your business idea while maintaining your current job. The proximity to your workspace means you can experiment with marketing strategies, tweak your products or services, and measure results in real-time.

Example: Launch a small-scale product (10 products or less Shopify) store or offer 1 - 2 freelance services that you can provide on evenings and weekends. Use scheduling tools to promote your business during the week.

Focus on providing services, creating promotional materials, and planning for the following week, during the weekends when you're not working your remote 9 to 5 job. Use the insights you gain to scale (grow) your business gradually, earning more as you learn what works with your audience.

How Saved Commute Time Can Be Used to Build a Thriving Online Business

By reclaiming your commute time, you can reallocate those hours to activities that grow your business. Here are some productive ways to use that time:

1. Planning and Goal Setting

  • Develop a detailed business plan outlining your goals, target audience, and strategies.
  • Use tools like Trello or Notion to organize your tasks and create a roadmap for success.

2. Skill Development

  • Take online courses to learn essential business skills like digital marketing, SEO, or email automation.
  • Watch tutorials on platforms like YouTube or enroll in programs on Udemy or Coursera to deepen your expertise.

3. Content Creation

  • Create blog posts, YouTube videos, or social media content to establish your online presence.
  • Build a library of evergreen content that can drive long-term traffic to your site or store.

4. Networking and Outreach

  • Connect with other entrepreneurs or potential clients via LinkedIn, Facebook groups, or online forums.
  • Join communities in your niche to gain insights and collaborate on projects.

5. Building Your Platform

  • Set up and optimize your website or online store using platforms like WordPress, Shopify, or Etsy.
  • Use saved time to research and implement tools that automate processes, such as AWeber for email marketing.

6. Product Development

  • Work on creating or improving your products or services, whether they are physical goods, digital products, or courses.
  • Use your crafting or creative skills to develop unique offerings for your target market.

7. Marketing and Promotion

  • Develop and execute a social media strategy to reach your audience.
  • Run paid ads or experiment with SEO to drive traffic to your business.

8. Reflection and Growth

  • Use the extra time to reflect on what’s working and make data-driven decisions to improve your business.

Remote jobs offer the convenience of being in your home environment, saving time that you would normally devote to driving your own car, or using public transportation to get to work.

With the daily commute, as an "in office" employee,  you would have the option of packing your lunch each day or eating out which requires more effort and expenses.

If you drive your own car, include wear and tear on your car, including gas, tire, computer and mechanical maintenance. You'll have expenses associated with work clothing and accessories.

Start the new year with a job that allows you to lose the commute and save money on the extra expenses associated with driving to work and eating lunch each weekday.

Use the time and money you'll save to set up a side business that can bring in another source of income.
